These properties were achieved with a very complex construction of the aircraft. Special features of this aircraft are, for example, a riveted aluminium box spar, which absorbs the complete bending and torsion moments of the wing. Or the operation of the flaps via an electric motor. It takes about 10 seconds to fully extend or retract the flaps. The design as a two-seater with a span of 22 meters and therefore a four-part wing certainly did not simplify this, especially as it was the first aircraft of the Akaflieg in GFRP (glass-fibre reinforced plastic) construction. This resulted in a construction period of almost ten years, during which many difficulties had to be overcome with great effort.

Since its successful maiden flight on January 24, 1979, the aircraft has undergone many modifications over the years to improve the flight characteristics of the world's heaviest glider, with a take-off mass of 900 kilos.

Nevertheless, this aircraft still requires a lot of experience in flying. For example, the forces on the ailerons are still very high despite some modifications. On the ground this sensitive aircraft requires some caution. Also the set-up and dismantling as well as the maintenance are much more complex than with a normal airplane. All this makes this aircraft only conditionally suitable for competitions and everyday flight operations.

Since autumn 2009 the Mü 27 hangs in the Schleißheim airfield of the Deutsches Museum near Munich next to the fs 29 (Akaflieg Stuttgart) and AK1 (Akaflieg Karlsruhe). In her last flight she was towed from Königsdorf airfield to Oberschleißheim.
