When we are not at the airfield, but are screwing around with planes, designing new prototypes on the computer or coordinating our work, you can find us in our workshops or in the design office. The Akaflieg has not always worked in the same place in its over 80 year history. The Akaflieg started in Prien at the Chiemsee. Here was not only flown but also built. The workshop was located directly at the airfield and was home to all Akaflieg projects until 1967. Until that time the Technical University had "only" the construction office, library and meeting rooms. Workshop work was therefore carried out by the active students mainly on weekends. The last project that was started in the Prien workshop was the Mü26. With the closure of the airfield in Prien (see also history of Akaflieg) the workshop also had to be relocated. Fortunately there was the possibility to move into additional rooms of the Technical University (today TU Munich), so that all activities could be concentrated in one place. The spatial situation was thus preserved until the middle of the 90s when the great migration of the TU towards Garching began. So the Akaflieg got the opportunity to move with the design office and the workshop to the north of Munich in 1997.

The first project of the new location was the Mü30 "Schlacro", which was completely completed in Garching. In the recent past, the design office (KoBü) in the house was moved again.

At a glance we are now represented at 3 locations with workshop rooms and equipment. The core of our activities locates certainly at the TU Munich on the Garching research campus. There we are accommodated at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in rooms of the Chair of Lightweight Construction.

In the experimental hall wing of the building, we have sufficient space to operate a metal workshop and a fibre composite workshop, which are spatially separated from each other. This separation is very important, as fibre composite components are very sensitive to all kinds of oils and greases during production.

The Composite Workshop

Comprehensive equipment such as a vacuum system, roving drawing machine and all common processing aids are available for fibre composite construction. An overhead crane is also installed to handle heavy moulded parts (some of the Mü31 moulds weigh well over 500 kg). There is also an exhaust system which is indispensable for all work with chemical substances and painting work. Furthermore, there is a fabric cabinet in which raw fibres and fabrics can be stored safely for later use, as well as all kinds of equipment for grinding and woodworking.

The metal workshop

The metal workshop is also fully equipped. In addition to lathes, milling machines and drilling machines, you will also find various welding equipment (WIG, MIG/MAG, Gas), folding benches, grinding machines and much more. The Garchinger Metallwerkstatt also stores a large part of our metal materials, including many common aviation steels and special alloys, which are used again and again for repairs or new constructions.

The design office (KoBü), where we construct and finish other administrative tasks, can be reached from courtyard 6 (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering), where you enter the cellar in building 6 and follow the Akaflieg signs. The room number is MW U632. The workshop can be found as an adjoining room to the workshop of the Lightweight Chair near the wind tunnel - it is particularly noticeable that there is usually a glider trailer in front of it.

Directions to Garching

The workshop and the design office in Garching can be reached from Munich as follows:
Travelling with a car
Public transport
Take the U1, U2, U7 or U8 from Munich central station to Sendlinger Tor. From there take the U6 in the direction of Garching-Forschungszentrum to the terminus.  Take the exit at the end of the platform (in the direction of travel) to get out in front of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

In spring 2007, after lengthy discussion, a workshop was added at the Munich University of Applied Sciences. It is supposed to enable FH, LMU and TU-city campus centre students to carry out smaller, less machine- and space-intensive projects without having to travel to Garching. In addition we can relieve so the Garchinger workshop in the rush times in the winter. At the moment we use the well-equipped premises together with a group active in vehicle construction. Nevertheless, the FH Werkstatt will certainly be able to make a valuable contribution when it comes to smaller, but perhaps more specialised work or superstructures, for which there is often not enough space in Garching.

The workshop at Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS)

The design office (KoBü) at the FH (Munich University of Applied Sciences, MUAS) can be reached from the main entrance of the W-Bau (diagonally opposite the Red Cube) by walking down the stairs and then along the passage. The KoBü is centrally located on the left, with an Idaflieg sign on the door. The workshop can be found at the parking lot of the W-Building. The entrance door to the workshop is the first (metal) door on the left side of the car park. In winter there is often a glider trailer here as well.

Directions to Hochschule München

Die Räumlichkeiten an der Hochschule München sind wie folgt zu erreichen:
Travelling with a car

Public transport
From Munich main station take tram line 20 in the direction of Moosach or tram line 21 in the direction of Westfriedhof. Get off at the "Hochschule München" stop and follow Lothstraße (on the right in the direction of travel). The walk to the W-Building takes about 7 minutes.

The third location is the workshop area of our clubhouse /hangar at the airport in Königsdorf. There are another 2 rooms, mainly for maintenance work during the flying season and for the maintenance of the Mü 30 Schlacro.

The workshop in Königsdorf

The airport can be reached from Munich via the A95 and B11.
